I know, I know... But! It's still pretty cool. The petals were low layer damascus...but I realized that I would only be able to heat one petal and shape it, then sand it smooth, and finally re-etch it before moving on to the next one. For this project, there was no way I was going to go through all of that. So you can only tell it's pattern welded steel petals if you are looking for it and you definitely can't tell it from the pictures.
The knife itself is a Twist pattern damascus, which you can see very clearly and its probably the redeeming feature on the knife. I know it will get a lot of laughs and maybe a little hate, but hey it's a late Valentines day present.
It is a gift to a friend. I've made another one, but it's already shipped to the couple. I'm working on a 3rd, but who knows if I'll have time to take a picture of it before leaving.
There are three different layers of metal and I'm not sure if I want to do that again. Stainless steel, damascus, and brass.
It's propped up on it's walnut based stand. The 'sheath' if you will is walnut burl, and the blade sits in it all the way up to where the P of my name starts. So you can still see Pearce when it's on display. That part was unintentional, but it's pretty cool how it happened.
A glass dome fits over the base, as the knife itself stands straight up in the center of it. Giving it that Beauty & the Beast feel.
It was made all in good fun and since my real art knife fell through, I knew I could complete this. Plus the person that it will be given to will be at the show, so it's really just because I was taking it anyway.
It's meant to be a letter opener, although it is sharpened and will shave. You can faintly see the temper line in the blade.
Overall it was a fun piece. I have another design along this same lines, since I have another glass dome and base that I plan on trying it out on soon. It will be slightly more complicated and drawn out. I figure I'll work on it after I finish remaking Avatar and Twisted Wing.
I wish I could have had one of the pictures with it in the glass dome, but I couldn't get a decent one to come out to save my life.
By the looks of things, this will be the last submission until I get back from the show. So I'll be back on Sunday/Monday. Hope you all have a good weekend. ^.^
Great work! I like simple integral knife! I would work next year with Christian Avakian, one of the most talented french artist, to learn to forging damascus. Check out one of his work : [link]
Love it, the overall composition, the pattern. It's an eyecatching piece. I looks strong and delicate at the same time. In the way i see it it's made for a tough chick
