The blue is more vibrant in real life. I had another picture that made it show up better, but the over all picture was worse.
I have to admit that I designed the knife based off a complied set of other fillet knives. It bugged me how huge all of the handles are in comparison to the blade. So I shot for something in between my normal handles and those of factory style fillet knives. Very few of them had any sort of lanyard hole, but I felt like if I were going to use one, I would like to have a lanyard on it or at least the ability to put one there if I wanted it.
I have made fillet knives in the past, shorter and fatter ones. I always hated how the handle material would pull away from the blade when flexed, so I made sure to put a bolt as close to the front of the handle material as possible to reduce that pet peeve as much as I could.
I had also planned on carving this one ages ago, but I never got around to it. :\ I still think it looks good like this, but maybe once I'm caught up I'll be able to put more time into projects like this.
Those are also my complaints with fillet knives. Sometimes the handles can be a good 1 x 1/2 inches wide and it's hard to get a good grip one it. And if the handle pries up it's hard to clean.
One reasons one of the first knives I TRIED to make was a fillet knife with a spike horn handle. Then a candle dripped red wax on the concept drawing from the tip to the handle and suddenly stopped so I was like "Ummm no..." and destroyed it. o.O
Nah mate, didnt get round to it, but hitting the university sculpture departments forge monday to do a cambodian iron age spear head, which should be fun
I like the smaller handle. It looks like it would give much more maneuverability than a larger, more cumbersome handle. Also, if the blue looks this good in the photo, I would LOVE to see how nice it is in person.
